Hi
I’m Phillip Muzzall

I’m an

Artist             Creative         Video Editor

Currently residing in Sydney,
and looking for the right
full time role as a Creative.

My work below sits across two worlds.

Commercial production and an independent art practice that keeps the other one honest.

Lighting of the Sails:
‘Kiss of Light by David McDiarmid’
VIVID Sydney

2025

Creative

For VIVID 2025, VANDAL was commissioned to create the festival’s centrepiece: a 7-minute projection mapping experience for the Sydney Opera House during the annual VIVID Festival.

As a Creative on the project, I collaborated closely with Creative Director Chris Scott and Lead Art Director Anna Fraser from the onset. My role encompassed initial motion graphic ideation and storyboarding, with a specific focus on curating McDiarmid’s extensive archive of Queer art to ensure a narrative balance appropriate for this iconic public canvas.

Beyond the visual narrative, I helped steer the audio direction, working with producer duo Stereogamous (Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour) to compose a bespoke track inspired by the early House music that defined McDiarmid’s era in the US. I also oversaw the entire post-production pipeline, managing the timeline from animatic to grading and final mastering.

City of Sydney‘s New Years Eve
Pylon Projections Content

2025
Lead Creative

VANDAL has been producing the content for the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon projections for the City of Sydney for the past 4 years. I was honoured to be the Creative Lead and Video Editor on the 2025/2026 iteration.

Since 2023 we’ve leveraged our bespoke local generative AI in our post-production workflow, seeing leaps in the technology. We approach it by treating the nuances of prompting and guiding with the same discipline as the intricacies of compositing. With that experience, we answered the theme ‘The Face Of The Earth’ by visualising a ‘Botanical Rewilding’ of Sydney Harbour. This featured endemic species of ‘Bloomers’, ‘Sky Seekers’ and ‘Ground Dwellers’; flowers, trees and the floor respectively.

In collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden, we gathered photography and DNA data of endemic species as well as Creative Commons assets to process in our custom generative AI. We utilised the DNA data to influence the design of our content, effectively letting the biology drive the animation. Our main art direction was to treat the AI generated content through a ‘UV’ and bioluminescent style. This tied it closer to the microscopic nature of DNA but also strategically maximised the colour and brightness needed for a projection display at Circular Quay.

M&M’s ‘Fit Check’
at the TikTok Awards

2024
Lead Creative

M&M’s the iconic Mars brand, always add a playful twist to red carpet events. Partnering with T&Pm and Hogarth Australia, we brought their idea to life: M&M’s characters rating TikTok influencers’ outfits in a fun, interactive way at the TikTok Awards.

Using VANDAL’s Magic Mirror technology, my team created custom animations, a sleek user interface and experience, and over 50 personalised compliments from five M&M’s characters. Guests enjoyed a lighthearted “fit check”, blending humour and style with M&M’s signature charm and personality.

As Lead Creative, I steered the entire visual direction for the M&M’s activation at the 2024 TikTok Awards. I led the 3D team and agency partners to define the look and feel for the outdoor environment, covering everything from character direction to lighting. I also drove the interactive strategy, ensuring the UX and UI across the microsite and Magic Mirror delivered a seamless and cohesive brand experience on the night.

Opera Australia La Traviata (2021)
Intermission
Editor

For Opera Australia’s 2021 production of La Traviata, I was responsible for creating the behind-the-scenes intermission content for its european cinema release. In addition to overseeing the offline and online post-production of the main film, my role involved editing the intermission content by weaving together several interviews with Constantine Costi, the show’s director.

The goal was to present a cohesive narrative that captured the emotions, actors, atmosphere, and organisational chaos that made the long-awaited 2021 performance worth the wait after delays caused by COVID.

Kaylee McKeown for Rokeby
2024
Editor

To celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympics, Rokeby proudly sponsors Kaylee McKeown. To highlight her incredible talent and the integral role Rokeby plays in her training, the brand commissioned a dynamic hype video showcasing her journey and dedication.

AND IF IT ALL FALLS APART, WHAT THEN? (2025)

Single-channel Video, 5 minutes
Stereo Sound by Lewis Orford
4K (3840x2160), 25fps
Artist

‘AND IF IT ALL FALLS APART, WHAT THEN?’ is a single-channel video piece that explores the fragility of memory, place, and the environment in a post-human context. The piece presents a world where nature is no longer physically present, existing solely through fragmented digital archives. The work reconstructs familiar landscapes into shifting, dreamlike sequences that hover between clarity and distortion, presenting the archive as both a site of preservation and loss.

This piece interrogates the limitations of both physical and digital preservation, highlighting the inherent shortcomings in our attempts to retain the essence of the natural world. Through the lens of memory, which reshapes our understanding of past experiences, environmental loss is depicted as a transformative process that alters the spaces we once knew. The archive thus becomes a memorial to what has been lost, holding a fragmented record of a world slipping beyond reach.

HUMAN DISTORTION
(2017 & 2021)

Single-channel Video, 5:36 minutes
Stereo Sound by Lewis Orford
8K (7740x3240), 24fps
Artist

This work reflects on the evolving landscapes of my hometown, Shoalhaven, NSW, as observed along the Princes Highway. Confronted by the transformation from new roads and bypasses, I considered the Anthropocene - an era marked by human impact on Earth’s systems.

Using code-driven techniques to process raw footage, I shaped an audiovisual narrative that moves from calm to digital disarray, evoking the subtle yet profound shifts caused by human intervention. The piece explores the ‘landscapes of time’ and invites reflection on nature’s changing form in the age of human influence.

In this version, the footage has continued to degrade, introducing heavier glitches and distortions. The result is more fractured and chaotic, reflecting a deeper sense of environmental disruption. Where the original version traces change with a quiet rhythm, this one breaks apart, suggesting that the impact of human intervention is not only constant but increasingly volatile.

Phillip Muzzall is a multidisciplinary artist working with video, post-photography, and digital mixed media. His practice examines how digital systems attempt to preserve place, memory, and identity, and where these systems begin to fracture. Through glitch aesthetics, compression artefacts, and generative distortion, he treats digital failure not as error but as evidence of erosion, environmental, cultural, and emotional.

Drawing from a background in media and digital arts, Phillip studied at the University of Wollongong and later refined his visual language at UNSW. He is a 2024 graduate of AWARD School. Based in Sydney, he works within VANDAL's creative team across conceptual development, design, and technical production, moving fluidly between gallery spaces and commercial environments.

I acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose land I work on. I also acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land in the Shoalhaven. I pay my respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.
